A. As a Secondary Student (1961-1963)

[I entered school late, when I was almost nine years old. The reason was that where I lived until I was eight and a half (Maringá, PR, city where Sonia Braga was born), there were no schools my parents cared to send me to. It was only when my parents moved to Santo André, SP, in 1952, that they put me in school. By that time I could read and write quite well, but even so I had to start in first grade. I started working full time in 1959, when I was fifteen and was in the eighth grade (fourth grade of the Brazilian "Gymnasium"), which I attended in the evening and almost flunked. When I finished the Gymnasium (1959) I was unsure whether to go into a "scientific" or a "classical" course of studies in secondary school -- at that time (1960) one had to decide that in Brazil. I first opted for the scientific studies, but hated them and quit in the middle of the year, losing one more school year in 1960. It was for this reason that finished secondary school only when I was already 20 years old. It was during my years at the Instituto "José Manuel da Conceição" that I discovered that I really liked to write. As one can see by the title of the papers I wrote there, the emphasis was on classical and literary studies].

B. As an Undergraduate Student in Brazil (1964-1967)

[My undergraduate studies in Brazil were complicated. I entered the Presbyterian Theological Seminary in Campinas, SP, in February 1964. The following month the military coup took place -- right on the day we were supposed to have our "freshman party". I stayed at the Seminary until 1966, when I was thrown out by the Church, which was becoming more and more conservative and even reactionary. I was "rescued" by the School of Theology of the Evangelical Church of Lutheran Confession in Brazil (Evangelische Kirche Lutherischen Bekenntnises in Brasilien), of São Leopoldo, RS, where I continued my studies. I never did get an undergraduate diploma in Brazil. In 1967 I was invited to go to Pittsburgh Theological Seminary in Pittsburgh, PA, to take my Masters, and the Board of Education of the State of Pennsylvania considered the studies I had had until then as equivalent to an undergraduate degree. So the years of 1964 through 1967 were spent in Campinas and São Leopoldo. During this period I was   unsure whether I preferred New Testament Studies or History of Christian Thought. But it was in Campinas that I took my first philosophy course, under the Rev. Francisco Penha Alves, and tried my hand at being a student newsletter editor, with rather disastrous results: all the issues of my newsletter were confiscated by the school.]

C. As a Graduate Student in the USA (1967-1972)

[The five years in Pittsburgh were my most proficuous years from an academic point of view. I learned -- and wrote -- a lot in an environment that was quite different from the ones I had known until then. It was at this time that I decided that I was really interested in the History of Thought, especially in the History of Philosophy. It was for this reason that, after finishing my Masters at the Seminary I opted to go into the Ph.D. at the University of Pittsburgh, concentrating my efforts on the confrontation between Philosophy and Theology in the eighteenth century -- confrontation in which David Hume played the leading role. That is why I wrote my dissertation on him.]


a. In the Masters Program
(1967-1970)

[Pittsburgh Theological Seminary was a very special place. Many foreign students there at the time: Glendora Paul and Amba Prasad, from India, and several friends from Brazil: Waldir Berndt, Elias Abrahão, Robert Nicholas Lodwick, Paulo de Oliveira Brasil, Lemuel Nascimento, Guilhermino Cunha, Samuel Soares.  Even my former teacher in Campinas, Rev. Júlio Andrade Ferreira, spent some time there studying, while I was there. The environment was congenial. I got a part time job working two hours a day in the Library in the evening and had a "carrell" (small, closed room) where I could keep the books and papers I was working with. The main benefit of the job was that I had a key to the Library, and so could stay there studying until 2 or 3 o'clock in the evening. Another benefit was that the Library every now and then sold books it did need or of which it had too many copies. Working there I was able to know in advance and have first pick. It was this way that I build an excellent library while studying. The teachers I liked the most were Ford Lewis Battles (Medieval and Reformation Church History), Dietrich Ritschl (History of Christian DOctrine), and George Kehm (Systematic Theology)].

b. In the Ph.D. Program
(1970-1972)
 

[I was a bit worried when I started my Ph.D. program. First, I was attending a University for the first time. Until then I had only attended theological schools. Second, I was surrounded by people who had majored in Philosophy in their undergraduate studies and who had already taken a Masters degree in Philosophy. I, except for the one-semester course I took in Campinas, had never studied philosophy formally. Innocently, the first course I took at the Philosophy Deparment was "Classical Issues in Metaphysics and Epistemology", conducted by no other than Prof. Wilfrid Sellars, the mega-star of the Department, considered by many the greatest American philosopher living. Had I known, before enrolling, that he was so important I might have postponed enrollment until a later semester. But I took the course, and liked him so much that I took a course under him every semester I was at Pitt, and he was the Department's senior member in my Doctoral Committee. I did well at Pitt. In the 51 credits I took for my Ph.D. I never got anything but A's. The great change that took place in my intellectual life came from meeting Prof. William Warren Bartley III, who introduced me to Karl Popper and became my doctoral adviser. I already had interest in logic and epistemology because of my religious doubts. He showed me how essential logic and epistemology are for understanding every intellectual endeavor, especially science. Popper was also a political philosopher, and Bartley was also a friend of Friedrich von Hayek. I also owe to Bill Bartley, therefore, my interest in political philosophy and, especially, in Liberalism. Bill Bartley also pushed me into finishing my Ph.D. at Pitt in record time -- and, when I did finish, he got me my first job at California State University in Hayward, CA., to where he was moving from Pittsburgh. What more can one say? Too bad he died so early.]

III. Mature Writings (1972-present)


[I took a rather long time to publish my first article after finishing my Ph.D. The teaching load at Hayward, and, after that, at Pomona College (Claremont, CA) was quite heavy, about three courses per term (of which there were three in Hayward and two in Claremont). And they were all new courses, since I had never taught before. Most of the time I wrote my lectures beforehand, to be absolutely sure I mastered all the issues that could be raised. Because of this, there was no time left for writing articles while in Hayward and Claremont. In July of 1974 I came back to Brazil to take my job at the University of Campinas (UNICAMP). To my surprise, I ended up being hired by the School of Education, not by the Philosophy Department (as I expected), since there was no Department of Philosophy at UNICAMP at that time. The worst, as far as I was concerned, was that I had never studied, much less taught, Philosophy of Education in my life. So, at least another year was spent familiarizing myself with the new disciplines I was supposed to teach. Because of this, my first articles only appeared in 1976.]
